The Adventures of Honu

Way back when... about two million years ago to be exact... so The Adventures of Honu begins.

This collaborative community story telling project tells the story of Honu’s journey to Hamilton City Libraries. It follows Honu on a series of wild adventures all over the greater Waikato, including being snatched by a Pukeko from Pokeno and being shot like a rocket ship out of a volcano. Written by Room 5, Nawton School 2012, and illustrated by Year 10 Art, Hillcrest High School 2013, this book is a fast-paced, action-packed story full of imagination and fun.

The idea for the book began when library staff member Justin wondered how a turtle came to be the libraries' mascot - no one seemed to know and that's when a group of library staff, including Justin, Fiona, Kelly and Sharon, came up with the idea of producing a back story, with ideas from the  community.

Hamilton City Libraries joined in partnership with Nawton School, who successfully applied for a CNZ Creative Communities grant through Creative Waikato which secured eighty percent of the project’s cost. Fusion Print provided design and layout at cost and gifted free time to complete the project. One thousand copies of the book have been printed.

We hope you enjoy reading and sharing Honu’s story.
