LibraryThing is the world's biggest online book club and discussion group. It allows members to share their opinions, reviews, ratings and tags with others. There are more than one million members worldwide. Hamilton City Libraries subscribes to LibraryThing for Libraries, which combines the information created by LibraryThing users such as tags and similar titles with book records in our catalogues. |

Look up the title on the library catalogue. Let's use Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling as an example. Most book records have a list of similar titles, which you can see displayed at the bottom in the picture below. These are books that are held in the library and that LibraryThing members think are similar to the one you looked up. Click on the title to be taken to the catalogue record for it.

Tags are user-friendly descriptive keywords used to label or categorise books. They might name main characters, genre, or location. The more people who have described the book using the same tag, the BIGGER and bolder the tag will appear.
More people have tagged this book with fantasy and Harry Potter than with J.K. Rowling and Witches. Clicking on any tag opens the Tag Browser (see below). This is the only place to search tags.
You will see a list of books with the same tag (fantasy in this example). Clicking on any of these books leads you to the library catalogue record. Search multiple tags at once by using the search box at the top, separating the tags by a comma. For example, fantasy and children's fiction. Note that clicking in the search box clears it.
Use minus (-) to demote a tag, or double minus (--) to remove a tag. For example, fantasy, -Harry Potter for books on fantasy demoting books tagged with Harry Potter to the bottom of the list, or fantasy, -- Harry Potter to remove books tagged with Harry Potter.
You can also click on the 'What's This?' tab on the tag browser for more information. |
