Hamilton Heritage

Our Heritage Collection, located on Level 3 of the Central Library, aims to preserve Hamilton's rich cultural and historical legacy. Also important is providing a sense of Hamilton's place in New Zealand and the global community.
While the focus of our collecting is on Hamilton and the Waikato, we also hold a large collection of books on NZ history, art and culture as well as government information such as statutes and reports. Books such as Domesday Book are part of our cultural heritage and are still valuable to genealogists boasting long pedigrees.

However, Heritage is more than just books. It includes the Waikato Times from 1872, unpublished letters and diaries of early Waikato settlers and memorabilia such as movie programmes from the 1930s, as well as a large and growing collection of oral histories ranging from architecture to the experiences of new migrants and the development of Hamilton Gardens.

If you are interested in what Hamilton used to look like, visit our collection of over 13,000 historical photos where you can find images of the Union Bridge in the 1880s or the destruction left by the Frankton Tornado of 1948. There are also aerial photographs of Hamilton from the 1940s through to the 1980s.
